Pres. Obama criticizes Supreme Court right to their faces, as Justice Alito shakes head and says “not true”January 28, 2010
Wow–talk about awkward moment.
ooooo. Just heard Megan Wright sing an audition on Idol. Reminded me a little of Carrie Underwood’s knockout audition.
I haven’t seen any episode except tonight’s, but I’m making my prediction. Megan Wright will be the next American Idol.
UPDATE: Wow. Megan got knocked out in Hollywood yesterday. Very disappointing. Judges said she was all over the place. They didn’t show her performance, but she was playing the piano and singing. Must have been a bad song choice. But there goes our pick! Oh well.
Justin Bieber defends fan channel “bieberzone” from YouTube suspension–is copyright uncertainty to blame?January 20, 2010
News: YouTube teen sensation Justin Bieber has entered the copyright fray. Apparently, YouTube suspended the account of a Bieber fan called bieberzone @bieberzone on Twitter,” who probably was reposting Justin Bieber videos. YouTube may have even removed some of Bieber’s own music videos (performing other people’s songs). All of this no doubt has something to do with copyright concerns–as the underlying music is copyrighted. But it’s not clear whether YouTube did this on its own, or whether some copyright holder complained. Bieber is working under Usher’s music label, so we’re guessing those in the music industry give Justin their blessing to create his YouTube videos.
Here’s what Justin writes on Twitter:
Dear Fans…IM ON THE JOB. you support me and I support you. fan sites like http://www.youtube.com/bieberzone should not be shut down!!

Dear Youtube. I love u. U helped me start living my dream. But I want u 2 stop messin with my fans and let ‘em post any vid of me they want!

very upset that some of my vids and some of my fans vids are being taken down by youtube. working to fix this now. no 1 messes with my fans
Analysis: Somewhat reminiscent of YouTube’s wrongful termination of the PS22 chorus’s YouTube channel–which thankfully was reinstated. It’s a shame YouTube is not doing more with the music industry to promote user-generated music videos, including with cover songs. The music industry can benefit by discovering more Justin Biebers or teen idols, who can bring in millions more in revenues.
I’ve written about copyright and user-generated content in an article titled “Warming Up to User-Generated Content,” which you can download by clicking here.
Justin Bieber is a teenage singer discovered on YouTube. We discovered him a few years back before Usher did. His new song “Baby” just went on sale and hit No 1 on Canada iTunes (where he’s from) and No 2 in the US.
Justin is using social media on Twitter and Youtube to attract a huge fan base.
Justin may become the biggest star from YouTube soon, if he’s not already. Quite an accomplishment for a 15 year old!
Judge drops YouTube video showing of same sex marriage trial; S. Ct. to decide if OK to show on trial court’s own websiteJanuary 12, 2010
Scotus blog has a great summary of where things stand on whether the trial over California’s ban on same sex marriage can be shown in time delay on the trial court’s own website.
The idea of putting the trial also up on YouTube through recorded videos apparently has been scrapped.
Today starts the federal trial in California over gay marriage. The case has David Boies and Ted Olson on the same side representing the plaintiff challenging the ban on same sex marriage.
The federal court has allowed the trial to be shown on YouTube (tape delay). We’ll provide the vids as soon as they are up.
UPDATE: The US Supreme Court stayed the decision to allow YouTube videos so it can consider the issue until Wednesday. More from AP
