Melinda said during her audition that she needed to prove to herself that she could step out from her BGV-life (Back Ground Vocalist) and perform the lead. Since the clock was ticking on her eligibility, the time was 'now or never' - so she chose the 'now.' As for Melinda's tenure on Idol, she proved that many Idol-fans ( young, old and in-between, text-messagers, power-dialers or just 1-ringy-dingy callers) were being delighted by her performances week-after-week. Regardless of what the naysayers emboldened by their IP-built fiefdoms have spewed out into the blosasphere, Melinda Doolittle is the real deal - a great voice and an exciting performer; and she is poised for a truly legendary career ala her Idols (Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin and more).
