News: Mary Anne Ostrom of the San Jose Mercury News has an insightful analyzing “The YouTube factor” in the presidential election.
Analysis: It’s too early to tell how big an impact YouTube will have in deciding the next President, but it certainly has had some impact already. All of the candidates would not be sharing videos on YouTube if they didn’t believe YouTube was an important tool. The real wildcards, however, are the user-generated videos, like the Hilary 1984 video and “I feel pretty” video mocking John Edwards. There will no doubt be more of these negative videos, upcoming. I belive the Utube videos have a potential to make an enormous differeance in how we select our canidates. As a body language expert for the last 26 years I know that nonverbal communication profoundly effects how we percieve others. I have been blogging my nonverbal communication assessments of everyone from Obama to Clinton and it amazing what insights you can gain. How important is body language? Havard undergraduates who were shown 10-second silent video clips of candidates in 58 gubernatorial elections between 1988 and 2000–candidates unfamiliar to the study participants. When asked who they though had won the election the students almost always picked the winner. They didn’t know anything about the background of and more importantly never heard a word they said.
